INTRODUCTION

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is an approach in counselling, psychotherapy and social work that aims to help clients to generate solutions. Its ideas have also been used in clinical supervision, coaching, education and management. It is an approach that is client-centred, strength-based, goal-focused, contextual and usually brief.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This 4-day workshop provides an overview of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy practices.

COURSE CONTENT

  • Introduction to SFBT

  • Problem-focused versus solution-focused

  • Stage of Solution Building

  • Pay attention to what the client wants

  • Set goals (eg use of Miracle Question)

  • Build on client strengths and successes

  • Formulate feedback for clients

  • Process for working with clients in subsequent sessions

  • Work with mandated clients

Participants will be engaged in group discussions, role plays, interviews, didactic instructions and demonstrations.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This course is suitable for practitioners in the social service field who are working with individuals, families, groups and/or communities. It will be relevant to those working with children, youth and/or adults. It is appropriate for social workers, welfare workers, counsellors, therapists, psychologists, teachers and anyone else who are interested in helping people.

AWARD

Participants who meet 80% class attendance will be awarded a Certificate of Accomplishment by the Academy of Human Development.

TRAINER

Chang Chee Siah is known for her engaging and high energy facilitation style, and brings with her almost 20 years of experience in counselling, coaching and training, in the areas of marriage & parenting, personal effectiveness & development, service excellence, leadership development & teambuilding, as well as effective classroom facilitation and training techniques. Her clients include corporations, academic institutions, statutory boards, as well as non-profit and religious organizations.

Chee Siah began her career as a senior counsellor working with families. She then became the Executive Director of a training agency that specialized in providing training and consultancy for the human and social service sectors. As part of the senior management team of a social service agency, she also mentored and coached the managerial staff in coaching skills and leadership development. She subsequently joined a training provider as a Senior Consultant and Business Development Manager. Being passionate about maximizing individual potentials, Chee Siah has coached and mentored many of her staff and clients to develop positive mindsets, overcome challenges and capitalize on their strengths and achieve greater level of success and satisfaction in life. Chee Siah has been featured and interviewed on various TV and radio stations, newspapers and magazines. She was one of the keynote speakers in the Marriage Conventions of 2014 and 2015.

A positive person by nature, Chee Siah always enjoys and treasures the simple moments in life, like being able to wake in the morning with her kids not having to rush, or just having a quick catch up with a friend over coffee. She is happily married with 3 lovely children.

Chee Siah graduated with a B.Sc. in Biopsychology from the University of British Columbia (Canada) and with a Masters degree majoring in counselling from the Trinity Western University (Canada). She also holds an Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment (ACTA) from WDA and a Diploma in Solution Focused Coaching Program. She is a certified in Creative Training TechniquesTM by The Bob Pike Group and is a Certified Behavioral Consultant in Inscape’s DiSC® technology. She is also a Certified Brief Solution-Focused Coach with the Canadian Council of Professional Certification.
