The Science and Art of “Couple Conversation” Facilitation

INTRODUCTION

Functional couple relationships are fundamental to a family’s operation and its members’ welfare, whereas relationship breakdown and discord are linked to a wide range of undesirable health and wellbeing outcomes. Conflict and differences are part of couple relationship. Research has shown that one of the key differentiating factors between happy and unhappy couples is in how they manage their differences.

“Couple Conversation” practices are a series of structured conversation sessions between a couple, facilitated by a trusted person, that aims to enhance communication and conflict recovery skills through a safe space created.

“Couple Conversation” is NOT a counselling/therapeutic approach, rather an additional tool and skill set to support those who work with and support pre-marital couples and any couples who desire to enhance their communication and conflict recovery skills. This is also not a suitable tool to manage crisis or intense conflict in a couple relationship.

“Couple Conversation” is an excellent complementary tool for marriage inventory or programs such as PREPARE/Enrich, PREP, and marriage mentoring.
