About the Course
Different perceptions, expectations and needs as well as individual’s personal problems can lead to communication breakdowns in the family which can adversely affect relationship with one another. Many who feel the stresses from work, study and family issues tend to retreat to their mobile phones and other technological devices for solace. Eventually, they have lesser interaction and become less connected with family members.
The aim of the course is to equip learners with the basic knowledge and skills deriving from the Satir Model to help their clients, friends, others and even themselves to have better interaction and connection with family members. This course will help to upskill one's interpersonal skills as well as knowledge and abilities to either help oneself or client to strengthen his/her relationship with families and others. Satir model is often used as a family therapy approach to strengthen family relationships.
In the course, learners will get to identify the Coping Stances and its effects; apply the Iceberg Model to discover self and others, and manage expectations; combat repeated negative and unhealthy patterns of feelings, thoughts and behaviours; and resolve differences. The application of congruence interactions helps to improve family interactions and strengthen family relationships.

Who Should Attend
This course aims to upskill those in people-helping professions such as social workers, counsellors or psychologists who are new entrants to the social service sector; para-counsellors or lay counsellors; community workers and volunteers who help clients and their families, as well as pastoral staff or elders from religious organisations who minister to families.
The course caters to people like individuals, family members and friends who may need the knowledge and skills to help their loved ones and others to improve family interaction.
There are people who take up the course to help themselves in enhancing their interaction skills in order to have better communication with their family members. Hence, the course is suitable for workers from any industry; not just the social service sector. As such, the course is open to the general public.
Award
Participants who meet 75% class attendance will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement by the Academy of Human Development and Social Service Institute.
Your Trainer
Ms Abby Chew
Ms Abby Chew Geok Bee is currently a Senior Counsellor with Fei Yue Community Services. Her social service experiences spanned across various groups of communities - families from Family Service Centre settings, couples with marital and parenting issues, couples and children who are going through divorce. She provides psychoeducation, group-work, casework and counseling services to these clienteles. Abby is also trained in Satir’s Transformational Systemic Therapy, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).
She also specialized in conducting life-skills training, group-work and family reintegration at Singapore Prison Service for inmates and their families. She provided social and counseling support to inmates dealing with addiction and offending issues. Abby also volunteered in providing training and counseling support for ex-women drug-offenders.
Abby is passionate about training and development to impact and transform lives. Through the Early Marriage Support Programme, Abby prepared minors for marriage. Abby is an adjunct trainer for the WSQ-Practical Counseling course with the Academy of Human Development. She also conducts workshops in National Silver Academic helping seniors managing major life transitions. Her wide training and counselling experience covers addiction, mental health issues, grief and loss, marital and family issues.
Prior to joining Fei Yue Community Services, Abby helped organizations with their developmental needs - facilitating organization change, organization learning, leadership development and coaching. She is trained in Leadership Development Programme by Centre for Creative Leadership (USA) and Learning Organization: Developing Leaders for Learning. She holds a Master of Social Science (Counseling) from Edith Cowen University, Australia. Abby is a Registered Counselor with the Singapore Association for Counseling (SAC) and a Registered Social Service Practitioner (RSSP) with Singapore Association of Social Workers.
